Terms and Event Descriptions

Akela – Any Den Leader, adult, or scout in charge.

Arrow of Light – Highest award available in Cub Scouting. Can be earned as a 2nd year webelos.

Arrow Points – Recognition of achievements after earning the Wolf or Bear badges.
                        10 achievements = 1 arrow point.

Bear Scout – 3rd grade boys, work toward earning the Bear badge

Blue and Gold Banquet – A celebration of the birth of scouting in February.

Bobcat Badge – Signifies that a boy has learned the basics of scouting, the promise, salute, sign, oath, and
                          motto. Must be earned before earning any other badges.

Boys’ Life – A magazine focused specifically on scouting and scouts. Published monthly by the Boy Scouts of
                   America. Yearly subscriptions provided by the Pack.

Communication – Articles on key dates or upcoming Pack events are listed in the "Adams Connection". The Pack website is www.pack105.com Den leaders are responsible for den-related updates and meeting schedules.

Crossover Ceremony – A ceremony celebrating the crossing over of the 2nd year Webelos to the Boy Scouts.

Cub Hike – A district event where the boys hike from station to station to participate in various events. A meal
                   is usually supplied and the boys earn a patch if they stay to the end.

Cub Scout Adventureland – A Council overnight camping experience for scouts, leaders, and parents at
                                             Gerber Cub Scout Camp.

Day Camp – A Council held day camp for Cub Scouts to have fun. Held at various parks throughout the Grand
                    Rapids area during the summer.

Den – Typically a "den" meets once a month to address specific, age-appropriate related activities. Once complete, the scout earns an achievement pin or belt loop which is displayed on the scout's uniform or brag vest. During the year, the scouts, with leadership from the Den Leader and parent volunteers work to earn the necessary items required to move on to the next level the following year.

Fast Start Training – Initial training video shown to new leaders who have not attended Leader Basic Training.

Fees – There is a nominal annual membership fee, payable in September at Scout Registration night. Nearly all of the Pack events are funded through proceeds from one annual popcorn sales event in the Fall. Scouts sell popcorn, with the proceeds benefitting Pack 105. Full participation is expected for this effort.

Friends of Scouting – A program to raise funds for the purpose of meeting the financial needs of the Council.

Good Turn – At the monthly Pack event, we have a "Good Turn" option. This is a way to bring an item to the Pack event, which is typically something aimed at helping our community. Previous examples include: cans of food; Books or Toys 4 Tots, School supplies etc.

Leader Basic Training- A (typically) 4 hr training for new leaders to learn about being a Cub Scout Leader.

Pack 105 – Is a Cub Scouts group organized out of Jayno Adams Elementary School. The "Pack" refers to all ages of scouts (Tiger Den- 1st graders, Bear Den- 2nd graders, Wolf Den-3rd graders , Webelos I Den- 4th graders , Webelos II Den-5th graders).

Pack Meeting – Once a month, the "Pack" meets and experiences an event, demonstration, etc. at the same time.

Parents – We are always in need of volunteers to assist with Den and/or Pack events. Working with cub scouts is a rewarding, fun and memorable experience!

Pinewood Derby – An event where each boy races his car, which he carves from a block of wood (Pine), against
                               others in the pack. Winners receive trophies and medals. We usually run adult races as well.

Popcorn Sale – A district sponsored fund raising event for the packs. This is our only fundraiser.

POW WOW – A special Cub Scout Leader’s learning extravaganza. Helps all leaders and committee members learn
                    more about planning all types of den and pack events. Usually held in October.

Quality Unit Award – A national award given to scouting units that meet a certain set of commitments and goals
                                   during the scouting year. Pack 3250 has achieved the Quality unit award for 2000.

Raingutter Regatta – Each boy is given a model boat kit to assemble. We then gather as a pack and race the
                                   boats in rain gutters filled with water. Medals are usually awarded.

Rocket Shoot – Each boy is given a model rocket kit to assemble. We then gather as a pack and launch the
                          rockets (and the boys chase them).

Round Table – A district meeting for sharing ideas for den meetings, crafts, games, and ceremonies and to pass
                         information from the district to the packs. All den leaders are invited to attend.

Scout Hall – Common name for the Center of Scouting which serves as the headquarters for the District. Located
                    at 3213 Walker Ave., the scout shop is also located there.

Scout Shop – A scouting materials retail store located at the Center for Scouting (Scout Hall).

Silversides Overnight – A pack trip to the USS Silversides submarine in Muskegon.

Tiger Cub – 1st grade boys, learn the basics of scouting

Uniforms – Scouts typically wear full uniform to every Den and Pack event unless otherwise noted. Uniforms can be purchased at the Scout Council Office on Telegraph Road in Waterford. Dunhams also carries items.

Wolf Scout – 2nd grade boys, work toward earning the Wolf badge

Webelos Scout – 4th & 5th grade boys, work toward earning the Webelos badge and Arrow of Light.

Winterfest – A district event held usually in February where the boys hike from station to station to participate
                     in various events. A meal is usually supplied and the boys earn a patch if they stay to the end.
